What can you do during the salerno cup?

Unspoiled landscapes, blue sea and millenary history

this is Salerno

Vista di Salerno

Protected by the Apennines and located between the Amalfi Coast and Cilento, the city of Salerno is a real gem to discover where extraordinary architectural beauties meet the blue of the sea.
A city with an ancient past, Salerno was dominated by the Etruscans, the Romans and the Lombards, all civilizations that have left their mark on the architecture of the historic center. In the 11th century the glorious Salerno Medical School was founded here which made Salerno a center of excellence where Latin, Greek, Jewish and Arab medical traditions met and studied and where women not only studied but also dedicated themselves to teaching.

The historical center, skilfully recovered after the damage of the 1980 earthquake, preserves its original structure intact with its alleys and open spaces that suddenly open to view and which today house the many premises where the nightlife and entertainment of Salerno is concentrated. Salerno is squeezed between the mountains and the sea and for this reason it develops in length along the coast; a consequence of the town conformation is the presence of 4 promenades. The oldest and most famous of the four is the Trieste promenade which serves the western part and the historic center.
Along the three tree-lined lanes that line the sea of the Trieste promenade, the people of Salerno meet to stroll and enjoy the view of the Gulf, have something to eat in the many bars and kiosks located here or wait pleasantly for their ferry departing from one of the ports located at the ends of the seafront.
As far as public green is concerned, this is guaranteed by the four main parks located within the city and by a dense network of municipal villas and minor gardens.

The structure of the ancient city is determined by two natural elements, the sea and Mount Bonadies whose slopes come close to the beach. The characteristic triangular structure is given by the walls built at the edge of the long beach, to protect the town from the dangers coming from the sea, to connect with Arechi castle, a grim fortress so impregnable that it was never conquered and, unlike other castles, was not transformed into a noble palace. From here you can enjoy a complete view from above of the entire town of Salerno, the port and the Gulf.
The defense to the east was guaranteed by Forte La Carnale located on a small rocky promontory which owes its name to a glorious and sudden sortie of the Salerno against the Saracen avant-gardes who in 872 were organizing the camp for the siege. Such was the massacre of enemies left to rot that the place was called "the carnage".

The Amalfi Coast is the pride of the province of Salerno, one of the largest in Italy but also one of the least populated. Since 1997 it has been designated by UNESCO as "World Heritage Site" having been recognized its high naturalistic, historical and artistic value .
Its favorable position has made it a tourist destination since the times of the ancient Romans and has always been a reference point with a cultural and natural value typical of the Mediterranean basin.
Its uniqueness is due not only to its infrastructures and services, but also to a collection of exclusive places set like precious stones within the rocks of the Mediterranean coast.

Each of the thirteen splendid municipalities of the Amalfi Coast offers tourists something unique. Among the most beautiful villages we recommend Amalfi, which gives its name to the entire coast and is rich in history, Positano, characterized by fashion which attracts VIPs every year and has long stairways that lead to the beach, and Ravello, known as the city of music, which offers an unparalleled panorama and knows how to entertain its tourist flows. Minori, which preserves its antiquity and is connected by the lemon path to Maiori, another less ancient city which offers wonderful beaches, and Vietri sul Mare, renowned for its precious ceramic decorations surrounding every corner and meeting point of the town.
Culture lovers can also visit the nearby excavations of Pompei.

To the south of the city lies the Cilento National Park and Vallo di Diano the perfect destination for a stay that can combine different interests, such as history, nature and relaxation.
Cilento is, in fact, an area with ancient origins as demonstrated by the Archaeological area of Paestum and Velia founded by Greek colonists at the beginning of the sixth century B.C. with the name of Poseidonia and which represents one of the most beautiful Italian archaeological sites. This is also a territory of myths and legends, as the beautiful town of Capo Palinuro reminds us, but also of important seaside resorts that have repeatedly won titles and awards for the beauty of their beaches. For example, Palinuro, together with Marina di Camerota, is characterized by enchanting views, beaches with crystal clear water, inlets and sea caves that have fascinated diving enthusiasts for years.
